Getting to Kyoto:
Kyoto does not have its own airport. The closest reasonable airport for international
flights is Kansai Airport (KIX) near Osaka. From here there is an excellent road and
railway network to get you to Kyoto.
Train from Kansai Airport - The JR Haruka station is located across from the arrival
gate and has a clearly marked walkway from the 2nd floor to the station. Here the
recommended route is to get on the JR West Haruka limited express. The fare is
¥2,980 (see Yen) and takes 73 minutes.
Bus from Kansai Airport - Airport Limousine buses are located directly outside the
arrival gates on the 1st floor. These buses are often same price if not more than the
train alternative and can take anywhere from 90-120 minutes. The only upside is that
some offer direct drop offs to popular hotels.
Another option that many travelers may take is to first spend time in Tokyo before
continuing there journey to Kyoto. In efforts of saving time and money flying is out of
the question and that leave the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo.
Tokyo to Kyoto by train - The fare for a
Shinkansen ticket from Tokyo to Kyoto is
around ¥10,000-13,000 and take anywhere
from 2-3.5 hours depending on type of train.
Shinkansen's vary by class/speed and that
determines the amount you pay.
Shinkansen's may be boarded from Ueno,
Tokyo, and Shinagawa bound for Kyoto.
Tokyo to Kyoto by Bus - If time allows and
you have the patience a cheaper alternaitve
to the train is a tour bus. Because of the
many companies there is a price compitition
from Tokyo to Kyoto. There is even a night
bus so you can sleep and start your day!
Most bus companies start the trip from either Tokyo station or Shinjuku station. The
exact location around the station my vary slightly from each company. When booking
your reservation companies often provided printable maps that can be gotten from
their websites. Prices can range from ¥5,000-10,000 depending on class of bus (size
of seat) and day of the week.
