What to see:

Travelers may take a walk out onto the main
stage of the Kiyomizu Temple which towers
13 meters over the ground below and
provides a great view of the city.

Some believe that if you jump off the stage
and live you will be granted a wish.  It is said
during the Edo Period that over 200 people
jumped off and roughly 85% of them lived.  It
is now prohibited to attempt this.
Beneath the main hall is the Otowa waterfall,  where the three streams of water drop
into the pond below.  Visitors to the temple may wait in line to drink from the water,
which is believed to have therapeutic powers.  It is said that these streams will grant
you wisdom, health, and longevity.  However, some Japanese believe that you should
only choose two, if you are greedy and drink from all thee, you invite misfortune upon
yourself.

The temple complex is quite large and offers several other shrines, among them the
Jishu Shrine, dedicated to Okunihush, a god of love and "good matches".  You will also
find various souvenir shops that sell talismans, incense, and omikuji (paper fortunes)
among other things to be bought.

How to get there:

Kiyomizu Temple can be accessed by bus number 100 or 206 from
Kyoto Station
getting off at Kiyomizu-michi or Gojo-zaka.  From there it is a 10-15 minute uphill walk
to the temple.

Brief History:

The Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the early Heian Period.  The Kiyomizu Temple was
first built in 798, and its present building was constructed in 1633.  The temple gets it
name from the waterfall inside the complex, which runs off nearby hills.   Kiyomizu
means
clear water or pure water.
