What to see:

Kodai-ji Temple offers much to see starting
with the temple grounds.

Upon entry you can walk though the bamboo
grove, tea houses, and past the rock
gardens.

If one wonders away from the main temple
area you will find a Japanese cemetery filled
with 100's of grave sites.
How to get there:

Kodai-ji Temple is located in the Higashiyama (East Kyoto) area near Yasaka Shrine
and Kiyomizu Temple.  Both the local bus stop and rail station  are about 20 minutes
walk from the temple.  Unless you wanted to just see the Kodai-ji Temple I would
suggest walking the 20 minutes and seeing the other sites.

Brief History:

The Kodai-ji Temple was built in 1606 by Kitano Mandokoro, wife of the Shogun and
the chief adviser to the Emperor, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, to pray for the repose of his
soul.  Much of the complex was destroyed by fire in 1789.  Several buildings survived
to include Otama-ya, Kaison-do, Kangetsu-dai, and Kasa-sai.
