Brief History:

The site of the Ryoan-ji Temple was originally a Fujiwara family estate during the Heian
period.  The temple was founded in 1450 by Hosokawa Katsumoto, a military leader in
the Muromachi period.

The original temple buildings burned down during the Onin Wars (1467-77), in which
Katsumoto  was killed.  The temple reconstruction was from 1488-1499, and Ryoan-ji's
famous rock garden was most likely
contracted around this time.

What to see:

R
yoan-ji Temple, famous for its Zen Rock
Garden, which is considered to be one of
the most notable example of the "dry-
landscape" style.

The simple yet remarkable rock garden
measures only 25 meters from east to west
and only 10 meters from north to south
Kiyoyochi Pond

The temple grounds consist of over 120 acres, including the majestic mountain
background, and are well worth a stroll, particularly around the large pond.  The pond
has two islands, the larger of the two is connected by a small bridge leading across to
a shrine of Benten, the Shinto goddess of good luck.

On the outer edge of the pond is a little restaurant, Ryoan-ji Yudofuya, with tatami
rooms and screens.  Here you can eat yudofu or have a choice of an expensive beer
all while enjoying the view.

How to get there:

Ryoan-ji Temple is a short 5 minute bus / taxi ride or 15 minute brisk walk west of
Kinkaku-ji Temple.

Ryoan-ji Temple can be accessed by bus number 101 or 205 from
Kyoto Station
getting off at Kinkaku-ji-mich, then transfer to bus 59 getting of at Ryoan-ji mae.
