Brief History:
Yasaka Shrine was first built in 656. It was dedicated to Susanoo-no-mikoto, the great
god in Japanese mythology, know as the god of prosperity and good health. Many of
the remaining buildings that you see today were reconstructed in 1654.
a roofed ceremonial stage for religious ceremonies. The many lanterns that decorate
the shrine's stage are lit after dark and bear the names of their sponsors.
The main building at Yasaka is the Hoden (spirit hall), a single story building with a
wooden shingle roof. Here worshipers wake up the god with a rattle of pan shaped
bells at the front of the building, then pray before the alter.
Visitors may also to choose to exit the shrine from the back and walk though
Maruyama Park, one of Kyoto's most popular places to view cherry blossoms.
How to get there:
Yasaka Shrine can be accessed by bus number Raku 100 or 206 from Kyoto Station
getting off at Gion Stop. From there it is a short walk to the temple.
